Spectacle Blind Flange Figure-8 Spec Blind ASME B16.48 Manufacturer Mumbai India

Key Features

One piece — solid blind disc and open ring permanently joined

Both discs are machined from a single plate and are permanently connected — they NEVER get separated. Critical safety advantage over Paddle Blinds (two separate pieces that can be mixed up or lost).

Positive isolation — zero leakage, always visible from outside

The handle always points to the active disc (BLIND or OPEN). Position is readable from outside the flange — critical for safety in confined spaces and shutdown operations.

Mandatory for maintenance isolation in hazardous service

Required by OSHA 1910.147 and Process Safety Management (PSM) regulations for positive isolation during maintenance on hazardous process lines.

Regulatory Requirement: Positive Isolation for Hazardous Service

Spectacle blinds are classified as positive isolation devices under OSHA 1910.147 (Control of Hazardous Energy) and are required for maintenance isolation on hazardous process lines. When ordering, specify:

1. NPS (e.g. 6")
2. Pressure Class (e.g. 300#)
3. Material (e.g. A516 Gr.70)
4. Face Type (RF / FF)
5. Service (fluid, temp, pressure)
6. Standard (ASME B16.48)

What is a Spectacle Blind Flange?

A Spectacle Blind Flange (also called Figure-8 Blind or Spec Blind) is a dual-disc safety isolation device permanently installed between two flanges. It consists of:

1

SOLID DISC (the "blind")

Blocks flow completely when rotated into position — provides absolute positive isolation.

2

OPEN RING (the "spacer")

Allows normal flow when rotated into position — ring bore matches pipe bore for unrestricted flow.

3

CONNECTING BAR / HANDLE

Joins both discs permanently and allows visual identification from outside — always readable at a glance.

The two discs are machined from a single plate and are permanently joined — they NEVER get separated. This is the critical safety advantage over Paddle Blinds (which use two separate pieces that can be mixed up or lost).

How It Works — 2 Positions:

✅ OPEN Position — Flow Allowed

Open ring sits between the two flanges. Fluid flows freely through the ring bore. Handle points to "OPEN" side.

🔒 BLIND Position — 100% Blocked

Solid blind disc rotated into position. Fluid is 100% blocked. Handle points to "BLIND" side. Positive isolation confirmed.

🛡️ SAFETY IMPORTANCE

Position is ALWAYS VISIBLE from outside the flange — critical for safety in confined spaces and shutdown operations
Mandatory in refineries, chemical plants, and offshore platforms for turnaround/maintenance isolation
Provides POSITIVE ISOLATION (also called "positive blindage") — more reliable than valves (valves can leak past seats)
OSHA, NFPA, and industry PSM (Process Safety Management) programs require positive isolation during maintenance
Standard: ASME B16.48 (Line Blinds — the primary standard)

🔗 For frequent maintenance isolation cycling, Spectacle Blind is preferred over a standard Blind Flange. Compare our complete flange range for your project.

📐

Blind disc and ring have DIFFERENT thicknesses — ring is thinner as it only provides spacing (not pressure containment).

📏

Overall Width = total span of the figure-8 shape. Critical dimension for space planning in congested piping areas.

⚖️

Above NPS 16", spectacle blinds become very heavy (60–150+ kg) — consider Paddle Blind (spade + spacer ring) for large bore.

📋

Class 300# requires thicker blind plates per ASME B16.48. Contact us for Class 300#, 600#, and 900# dimension tables.

📋 To Order a Spectacle Blind — Send Us These Parameters

1. NPS — Nominal Pipe Size (e.g. 6")
2. Pressure Class (e.g. 150# or 300#)
3. Material Grade (e.g. A516 Gr.70 / A182 F316L)
4. Face Type (RF — Raised Face / FF — Flat Face)
5. Service Fluid (e.g. crude oil, steam, H2S, acid)
6. Special requirements (NACE, low-temp, HIC tested)

Flange Face Types

Spectacle Blinds are available in RF (Raised Face — most common) and FF (Flat Face). RTJ is not used for spectacle blinds per ASME B16.48.

Raised Gasket Area

Raised Face (RF)

Most common. A raised circular ring that concentrates pressure on a smaller area to compress the gasket. Height: 1/16" for Class 150/300; 1/4" for Class 400 and above.

100% Flat Mating Surface

Flat Face (FF)

No raised portion; entire flange face is in the same plane. Used when mating against cast iron or non-metallic flanges to avoid cracking on bolt tightening.

Deep Metallic Ring Groove

Ring Type Joint (RTJ)

Oval or octagonal groove machined into the face; a metal ring gasket seats in the groove. Used in high-pressure, high-temperature critical service (refineries, oil fields).

Interlocking Alignment

Tongue & Groove (T&G)

One flange has a raised ring (tongue); the other a matching groove. Provides excellent alignment and a confined gasket. Used in pumps and valve bonnets.

Recessed Female Mating

Male & Female (M&F)

Similar to T&G but the female face is flat and the male face raised. Used in heat exchangers, pressure vessels, and high-integrity process joints.

Heavy-Duty Contact

Large Male & Female

Same operating principle as the standard Male & Female flange, scaled up with larger step contact surfaces for specialized heavy industrial equipment.

Advantages & Limitations — Spectacle Blind vs Other Isolation Methods

🔒

Positive Isolation — Zero Leakage

Unlike valves (which can leak past seats), a correctly installed spectacle blind provides absolute isolation — required by OSHA 1910.147 and PSM regulations.

👁️

Always Visible from Outside

The handle always points to the active disc (BLIND or OPEN). No need to open the flange — isolation status is readable at a glance from outside.

🔗

One Piece — Cannot be Lost or Mixed Up

Blind disc and open ring are permanently joined from a single plate. Unlike Paddle Blinds (two separate pieces), there is no risk of mix-up or missing components.

🔄

Fast Switching — One Rotation

Switch from flow to isolation by unbolting flanges, rotating the figure-8, and re-bolting. One operation vs removing and reinstalling two separate Paddle Blind pieces.

🏭

Mandatory for Turnarounds (TAR)

Standard safety requirement in refineries, chemical plants, and offshore platforms for unit shutdown isolation. Required by API 590, ASME B16.48, and plant safety procedures.

🛡️

Compliant with OSHA & PSM Regulations

Classified as a positive isolation device under OSHA 1910.147 (Control of Hazardous Energy). Required by process safety regulations for maintenance on hazardous lines.

vs Valves

Spectacle Blind provides POSITIVE isolation — zero leakage possible; valves can leak past seats
Spectacle Blind is visible from outside — always know current isolation status
No valve seat degradation — spectacle blind never wears out; valves deteriorate over time

vs Paddle Blind (Spade + Spacer Ring — two separate pieces)

Spectacle Blind = ONE PIECE ALWAYS — blind and ring joined; cannot be lost, mixed up, or installed wrong
Installation is clearer — handle points to which side is active; no confusion
Faster switching — one rotation vs removing and reinstalling two separate pieces
Spectacle Blind is heavier for large sizes (NPS 16”+) — Paddle Blind preferred for large bore
Spectacle Blind costs more than equivalent Paddle Blind

🛡️ Safety Compliance Requirements

Required by OSHA 1910.147 (Lockout/Tagout — positive isolation of hazardous energy)
Required by process safety regulations (PSM, COMAH, SEVESO) for critical isolation
API 598, ASME B31.3 recommend spectacle blinds for maintenance isolation on hazardous service lines

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Spectacle Blind Flanges — Figure-8 vs Paddle Blind, ASME B16.48, face finish, large bore alternatives, and handle markings.

A Spectacle Blind (Figure-8) is ONE PIECE: solid blind disc and open ring joined permanently by a handle. It stays installed between flanges always. A Paddle Blind uses TWO SEPARATE pieces: a Spade (solid blind) and a Spacer Ring (open ring) that are individually stored and swapped. Spectacle Blind = safer (no mix-up), more convenient for frequent cycling. Paddle Blind = cheaper and lighter for large bore sizes (NPS 16"+).
ASME B16.48 is the primary standard for line blinds (spectacle blinds, paddle blinds, spades). ASME B16.5 covers flanges. The spectacle blind is NOT a flange itself but a line component installed BETWEEN flanges. B16.48 covers sizes, pressure classes, tolerances, materials, and markings.
The seating faces are machined to a Raised Face finish (2.5–6.3 µm Ra, known as "stock finish") matching the mating flanges. The raised face ensures the full gasket seating load is concentrated on the gasket. RTJ face is NOT used for spectacle blinds.
Above NPS 16", spectacle blinds become very heavy (60–150+ kg). At this size, Paddle Blinds (spade + spacer ring stored separately) are more common because: (1) lighter to handle, (2) can be lifted with lighter equipment, (3) significantly cheaper. The trade-off is that you must maintain both pieces carefully. Use spectacle blind for NPS 2"–14" in normal plant service; consider paddle blind above NPS 16".
Yes. All Remax Forge spectacle blinds include an integral handle with stamped or engraved "BLIND" and "OPEN" labels on the respective discs as per ASME B16.48 marking requirements. This is a code requirement — do not purchase unmarked spectacle blinds.
Yes. For steam service, ensure the material grade is rated for the service temperature. Carbon Steel A516 Gr.70 is suitable up to ~425°C. For higher temperature steam, Alloy Steel A182 F11 or F22 is used. Also ensure the gasket type is rated for steam (spiral wound or ring joint for high-pressure steam).
